CREBA First Look
On Tuesday, September 25th, CREBA members got an exclusive “First Look” at the New International Spy Museum opening at L’Enfant Plaza this Spring. Representatives from developer JBG SMITH, architects Hickok Cole, plus staff from the Spy Museum led VIP tours to our sold-out crowd. The Spy Museum will now own the new building and the air rights, plus increase their exhibit space by over 30% when they move from their current F Street location. The current Museum location is open through the end of this year, but the event space is already available for rentals at the new location.
Attendees learned that London based architects, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, along with Hickok Cole designed the building to capture the “clandestine” feel of the espionage world. Amateur sleuths may notice that the corrugated panels on the Eastern façade contain binary code. The glass veil that lines the side of the building provides a unique architectural element that adds to the revitalization happening in L’Enfant Plaza. JBG SMITH worked with the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) to get approval to cantilever the 7th floor and rooftop event spaces to allow expansive views of The Washington Monument, the US Capitol and the National Cathedral. The Museum connects the National Mall and the Southwest Waterfront’s Wharf and helps bring traffic to L’Enfant retailers outside of regular business hours.
After finishing their tour, members were treated to a Happy Hour hosted by JBG SMITH on the rooftop of 500 L’Enfant Plaza. Thank you to JBG SMITH and the International Spy Museum for hosting a fantastic event!
