Breakfast of Champions
In March, we kicked off the 2017 CREBA education series. Our first Breakfast of Champions event was with Keith Foery and Phil McCarthy of Transwestern. About 25 members of the CREBA Young Brokerage Network (members 35 and under) gathered in Transwestern’s K Street offices to hear how Keith and Phil navigated their early years in brokerage, became partners and then part of Transwestern where they now lead mid-Atlantic operations as Executive Managing Directors. They talked about the importance of their peers – especially when they were just starting out. Their crew shared resources, scoops, advice and encouragement… and lots of time at Nathan’s in Georgetown.
Keith and Phil are equal partners, responsible for 4 offices and 400 people or as they put it, 400 families. The Citadel/Navy man (Keith) and the would-be-lawyer and youngest of 9 children (Phil) say they are very different, but overlap on the important things – values, drive and ambition. “When you’re trying to ‘do what’s right,’ it’s important to be on the same page and we really always are,” says Phil. When asked what they look for when hiring, Phil said optimism, drive, smarts and a some fearlessness. Keith noted the importance of having people with diverse backgrounds; unexpected life or professional experiences. What about any regrets thus far? Keith laments a particular client relationship that they didn’t protect as much as they should. They did a small deal for the client who later ended up leasing 3+ full buildings that they missed. Phil says he feels they should have been a little more fearless. “Fear is what holds you back,” he said.
